The Romanian Ministry of National Defence, led by Defense Minister Angel Tîlvăr, has formally sought parliamentary approval to purchase 32 F-35 Lightning II fighter jets, with an estimated value of approximately $6.5 billion. This procurement, authorized by Romania's Supreme Council on National Defense in April, is planned to occur through the foreign military sales framework and will necessitate approval from the United States Department of State. The documentation provided to the Romanian parliament also suggests that, following the acquisition of two squadrons comprising the initial 32 aircraft, Romania may consider acquiring a third squadron consisting of 16 fighter jets.
