There are two critical elements to a solution:

1. Making the operators aware that their GNSS location is unreliable because of environmental effects or intentional actions. At least they know that the information is wrong and can act and communicate accordingly.

2. Maintaining the positioning as closely as possible to the previously trusted location, including factoring in actual movement until a reliable GNSS (or manual) update is received.

Epic Blue has developed a positioning solution for GNSS-denied environments. The solution is called Hyper Location. It consists of an AI engine trained to transform human body movement (IMU) data into spatial displacements. So we know where the person is next even without GNSS.It also fuses any available GNSS or Bluetooth signals to correlate location fixes. Hyper Location deploys on smartphones to use their sensors and calculates positions.

The proposed approach to achieve GNSS resilience on mainstream smartphones is to use the Hyper Location software as the basis. It is a software-driven shield that detects (1) jamming or spoofing indications and (2) ensures positioning robustness of prior trusted locations (making allowance for when actual movement is detected).

The technical work consists of extending the use of Hyper Location, designing the relevant triggers, and implementing it as an ATAK plugin to ensure rapid deployment and full compatibility with currently deployed capabilities.
